Peabody Energy is the world’s largest private-sector coal company. With operations that span the globe and a property portfolio that’s constantly expanding, Peabody takes pride in partnering with only the world’s best organizations.
The El Segundo Coal Company is Peabody’s newest subsidiary. To gain access to a remote coal seam, El Segundo had to move heavy mining equipment across New Mexico’s State Highway 509. They needed a supplier that could design and manufacture a solution that worked well within the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s construction standards, without compromising the highway’s traffic flow. With our proven commitment to innovative engineered solutions, and a product for nearly every mining application, Big R Bridge was an obvious choice.
Big R Bridge worked closely with the mine and their consultant, Bohannan-Huston, to design the most cost-effective solution. An above-grade crossing was selected to ensure minimal traffic disruption. A steel arch made from deep-corrugated, Super-Cor, was an obvious choice given its economy and ability to support the heaviest mining loads. The Super-Cor arch (47′ span, 23′ rise, 130′ length) supported frequent heavy haul truck traffic as well as a 2.688 million pound mine shovel. Big R also supplied MSE Structural Wall Systems for the headwalls, saving even more time and money on the project.
From start to finish, the crossing installed in approximately two months and proved, once again, that our quality products and support can help lighten the workload.
